About Data Privacy Week

Data Privacy Week commemorates the January 28, 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Since 2009, resolutions passed by Congress have supported the designation of January 28th as National Data Privacy Day in the United States. This year, the Data Privacy Day campaign has been expanded into Data Privacy Week, a full week-long initiative.

Data Privacy Week is a global effort meant to raise awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data, and enabling trust. Learn more at staysafeonline.org/data-privacy-week.

The themes for Data Privacy Week 2022 are "Respect Privacy" for organizations and "Keep It Private" for individuals.
- Be Aware. When you use your connected tech devices, like personal assistants, wearables, speakers, cameras, TVs, cars, toys and appliances, you are continuously generating information about yourself and others. This abundance of data can be stored and sold in ways that you may not expect, or even stolen by bad actors.
- Manage Your Privacy Settings. Did you know that you can customize your privacy settings on more than just social media platforms and websites? Television, internet, and telephone providers, ride-share services, streaming services, and smart devices all have privacy settings. This guide from the National Cybersecurity Alliance is designed to help you review and update your privacy settings for over 100 popular websites and devices.
- Bolster Privacy Awareness in Your Agency. Use Data Privacy Week to help your employees, contractors, and key internal stakeholders understand federal privacy requirements. Share these FPC educational videos within your agency.

Data Privacy Week Events

Government-wide Events (Open to all Federal Employees)

On January 25, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Privacy Service will host a virtual event as part of its VA Privacy in Action Speaker Series, titled “Evolving Identity Theft Tactics & Protections”. On January 26, the State Department will host Dr. Lawrence Capello at noon to discuss his book, None of Your Damn Business: Privacy in the United States from the Gilded Age to the Digital Age, University of Chicago Press, 2019. The talk will be presented virtually as part of the Department of State's Ralph J. Bunche Library Speaker Series. On January 27, the NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) will host a Learning Series Fireside Chat: Managing Privacy Risks with the NIST Privacy Framework event from 3:00pm - 3:45pm ET. This event will include NIST’s Privacy Engineering Program team. On January 26, the U.S. Department of Defense will host an internal event as part of its Privacy, Civil Liberties, and Transparency Speaker Series, titled “Van Buren vs. U.S., the Recent Supreme Court Case on the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.”
